Another Successful Run - The Boston Marathon 2010 - Hopkinton Massachusetts
26,000 runners headed out today for the 114th Boston Marathon from the starting line in front of the Hopkinton Common, Hopkinton Massachusetts.
The contestants included New York City marathon winner, Meb Keflezighi and fellow Californian, Ryan Hall who had been hoping to the give the United States its first men's win since 1983. The coveted first prize is in the amount of $150,000.
The victory ended up going to Kenyan Robert Cheruiyot who set a new course record. The women's prize went to Ethiopia's Teyba Erkesso who held off tough competition from Tussia's Tatyana Pushkareva.
Cheruiyot's time was 2 hours, 5 minutes and 52 seconds. This was a finish that was only 91 seconds ahead of the second-place runner, Tekeste Kebede of Ethiopia. Deriba Merga who had been the defending champion, came in third, followed by Americans Ryan Hall and Meb Keflezighi.
On the women's side, the time for Erkesso was 2 hours, 26 minutes and 11 seconds which was the third-closest woman's finish in the history of the marathon.
In the wheelchair race, Ernst Van Dyk took his ninth Boston Marathon win, making him the winningest competitor in the history of the event.
There was disappointment for some runners as the volcanic ash from the Icelandic volcano grounded their planes in Europe keeping them from the big event. About 300 to 500 participants were kept from the race due to this unfortunate natural phenomenon.
As always, the race wound its way from Hopkinton through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton and Brookline before reaching the final destination at the finish line in Boston at Copley Square.
Congratulations to all of the winners of the Boston Marathon. And, in my book, that includes anyone who ran the 26 miles and actually finished - no matter what their eventual time was!

I used to run in marathons and triathlons and boy do I miss it. I found it interesting that the man who one had the same name as a previous Kenyan winner!

Claudette - I couldn't even imagine running 26 miles. I just finished participating in Pat's Run here in Tempe Arizona. This is only a 4.3 mile run, and it just about kills me every year.

You must miss it. I understand that running is very addictive. Isn't that interesting about that Kenyan runner with the same name as the previous winner? It is really a small world when it comes to this race. So many Kenyans have won it.

No, not me. I have enough trouble running to get to my appointments each day, with the help of my car. I admire anyone who can run 26 miles (or even 5, for that matter.)

As you probably know, I am a tennis player. So, I can run around the court chasing balls. But, I have never been a runner. That takes a whole different set of muscles, breathing and stamina.

Yes, Patriot's Day is great fun as long as you don't get stuck in all of the traffic. And, my hat is off to anyone who can run that far.
